Kansas-Nebraska Act

 The Kansas-Nebraska Act

*Passed on May 30th,1854

Here are some questions that ople asked about the Kansas-Nebraska Act!

Why was the act passed?

The Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed because it allowed people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide whether to have slavery. The act served to repeal the Missourri Compromise of 1820, which prohibited slavery in the North.

Who was the author?

The author of this act was Stephan A. Douglas. He hoped that slavery would have the opportunity to expand. By having these hopes, more people would vote for him as president.

Did the act nullify(invalidate) any current laws? How?

The act nullified the Missourri Compromise. Both the Missourri Compromise and the Kansas-Nebraska Act are different. The compromise stated that no slaves were allowed in the north, while the act let people choose whether to have slavery.

What future events did the act have on the country?

There were many effects on the country due to the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Some include the Civil War, and "Bleeding Kansas". Also, Kansas and Nebraska became there own states. Some "anti-Nebraska" rallies took place.

How did the act push the North and the South toward war?

The act pushed the two sides to war by having pro and anti-slavery people vote on whether or not to turn their states into states with slavery, or not. This act also made the North and the South argue about slavery, which pushed them over the edge. People got very angry about the whole situation. Even Stephen Douglas got upset!
